Upper Hunter Shire Council thanks the 57 volunteers who removed 53 big bags of rubbish during Clean Up Australia Day in Merriwa, Murrurundi, Scone and Timor on Sunday 5 March 2018. Hundreds of school children were also cleaning up their neighbourhoods on Friday.
In Scone, with help from the Scouts, the Sunday clean up resulted in 16 bags of rubbish collected plus two shopping trolleys that were returned to the supermarkets.
The Merriwa Progress Association led volunteers including a contingent from the Merriwa Rural Fire Service and Cr Ron Campbell to clean up around the sports grounds.
In Murrurundi the volunteers were led by the local Landcare group, Pages River Warriors and concentrated their efforts around the road to the waste depot, the entrances to town and the Visitor Information Centre. Their most surprising find was a pig’s head.
Mayor Wayne Bedggood thanked everyone who participated including the schools, Scone Cubs, Scouts and Venturers and their leaders, Merriwa Progress Association, Merriwa Rural Fire Service and Murrurundi’s Pages River Warriors.
Clean Up Australia Day is run nationally in March to highlight the problems created by rubbish, and give the community power to improve the environment.
