Upper Hunter Shire Council thanks the hundreds of school children and 40 adult volunteers who took part in Clean Up Australia Day activities.
On Sunday 6 March about 165 kilograms of rubbish was picked up during Council-hosted clean ups in Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone.
In Scone, the Scouts helped lend a hand to tidy up around Elizabeth Park and the railway line.
In Merriwa numbers were lifted by Merriwa Rural Fire Service members joining in making it the most successful Clean Up Australia Day to date.
A number of Upper Hunter backyards got a clean up too with many residents taking up Council’s offer of a free drop off at the local waste depots for Clean Up Australia Day. About 275 ute loads of rubbish were disposed of for free, saving residents several thousand dollars in waste fees.
School children in Cassilis, Merriwa, Murrurundi and Blandford had their clean up activities last week. The students analysed the rubbish collected and were pleased to report a decrease in the number of cigarette butts and even some tennis balls and other items that were recycled.
