6 Young Locals Selected for Life-Changing Voyage

Upper Hunter Shire Council, in partnership with community sponsors, proudly hosted a Young Endeavour selection event last Friday evening. Six young people from across the Shire were selected to embark on a 10-day tall ship sailing voyage in April 2023, thanks to the support of the community.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme aims to provide young Australians with a unique and inspiring experience that develops their self-awareness, teamwork, leadership skills, and sense of community responsibility. Out of the 15 young people nominated for the leadership scheme, the following six were selected to participate in the life-changing voyage: Katie Sutcliffe, Keira Davis, Matthew Byrne, James Haydon-Wicks, Dylan Denley and Gabrielle Curry.

Special guests on the night included Mayor Maurice Collison, Deputy Mayor James Burns, Councillors Lee Watts and Adam Williamson, and General Manager Greg McDonald. The event was MCed by Councillor Tayah Clout and featured a special performance by Richie Lawton from Budbuddah Dreaming, who shared an Acknowledgment to Country and entertained the audience with his didgeridoo playing.

The event was further enhanced by guest speakers Chief Petty Officer Marine Technician Lindsey Smith and Young Endeavour Ambassador Toby Barry, who shared their personal experiences on tall ships and the impact it had on their lives.

The voyage would not be possible without the generous support of the scheme's sponsors, including Lions Club of Scone (Gold), Gilmore Rose and Partners, Cr Williamson & Family, Mr Andrew Lane, Scone Legal, Cr James Burns & Family (Silver), and Scone Equine Hospital, Ms Vanessa Whitten & Family (Bronze).
