Jane Hegarty: Upper Hunter Shire Citizen of the Year 2025

Jane Hegarty has dedicated countless hours to strengthening the Cassilis community, ensuring it remains a vibrant and connected place to live. As President of the Cassilis District Development Group, Jane has been instrumental in driving projects that support local businesses, tourism, and community wellbeing.

Her efforts have seen the Giro de Cassilis bike ride grow into an emerging tourism event, drawing visitors to the region and showcasing the beauty of Cassilis. She has also been the driving force behind the Cassilis Ball fundraiser, which has contributed over $20,000 back into the community, funding vital local projects and initiatives.

Beyond event organisation, Jane’s passion for education and community development shines through her work with the Country Education Foundation, where she provides guidance and encouragement to young people seeking further education. She is also an active supporter of Cassilis Public School P&C and has lent her expertise to a group of local mothers working to establish a childcare facility in Cassilis.

For Jane, the most rewarding part of volunteering has been working alongside others. “There are so many talented people in our communities, all with a range of skills. It is amazing what you can learn and achieve working together,” she shares.

Being recognised as Upper Hunter Shire’s Citizen of the Year has been a humbling experience for Jane, who credits the collective effort of the community for its achievements. “Receiving this award was a humbling experience, as you are only one person within an organisation. There are so many others who work alongside you and should be recognised as well. Without their support, the achievements that have been made for our community would not be possible.”

Her advice to others? Get involved. “Find those aspects of community life you are passionate about and get involved. The benefits you gain from volunteering are much greater than the hours you put in.”

Jane Hegarty is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together. Her leadership, dedication, and drive have created lasting opportunities for Cassilis, proving that small towns can make a big impact when people work together.
