Key Initiatives Endorsed at August Ordinary Council Meeting

In its ordinary meeting held yesterday, Council endorsed several vital initiatives aimed at both community development and economic growth in Upper Hunter Shire. Among the key topics discussed were the future of Warbirds Over Scone 2024, initiatives for affordable housing, and Council's participation in the upcoming 2023 Local Government NSW Annual Conference.

Following a confidential session, Council approved a strategic shift for the Warbirds Over Scone 2024 event. This marks the 40th anniversary of the first Warbirds Airshow in Australia. Council endorsed the recommendation to reposition the event, to compete in a growingly saturated market. This would involve expanding on its signature warbird airborne display, with the addition of captivating light and drone experiences. This decision is aligned with Council's focus on using major events to stimulate tourism and economic activity in the region, particularly given the event's past impact on the local economy.

Another key motion endorsed by Council came from Cr Adam Williamson, who proposed that Council write a letter to State MP Dave Layzell. The objective is to explore the potential for using state-owned assets in Upper Hunter Shire to meet the housing needs of vulnerable community members. This motion received unanimous support, reflecting the growing concern about the rising cost of living and the shortage of affordable housing in the region.

Lastly, Council resolved to nominate Cr James Burns as Council’s delegate for the 2023 Local Government NSW Annual Conference, scheduled for November 12 to 14. Additional Councillors have been encouraged to attend as non-voting delegates, and Council is also considering submitting motions for discussion at the conference.
