Upper Hunter Shire Council maintain two sites of cemeteries. In 1857 William Dumaresq dedicated four acres of his land along the New England Highway to the churches to be used for their cemeteries. In 1861 the Catholic Church was built and included burial sites in the church grounds. The first burial in the ‘new cemetery’ was recorded in 1864. This cemetery continued to be owned and managed by the churches. When the Presbyterian Church opened, they continued their burials in the Church of England until 1907.
In 1895 land was dedicated for another location on Common Road for a General Cemetery. This cemetery comprises of various sections. In 1985 the Scone Lawn Cemetery and Columbarium wall were consecrated.
The St Luke’s Anglican Church handed over their control of the Church of England Cemetery along the New England Highway to the Upper Hunter Shire Council in 2008 due to lack of resources to being able to maintain the land. This cemetery remains closed to any new reservations.
