Merriwa animal shelter is an unstaffed facility. It is used as a temporary holding pen for stray or surrendered animals. Stray animals are microchip scanned by Council staff, who then attempt to contact the owner. If an attempt to contact the owner is unsuccessful the animal is transferred to Scone animal shelter to be formally impounded and cared for. Animals are usually transferred to Scone animal shelter within 12 hours. Owners may arrange to collect, or request Council staff to return, the animal once impounding fees have been paid. Payment can be made at any Council administration office. You will need to show your receipt as evidence of payment before you may collect the animal. Impounded animals will be available for adoption after the following periods, as per the Companions Animals Act 2008:
