Upper Hunter Shire Council is reminding residents of the hazards of putting certain items into bins for kerbside or commercial collection, especially during heatwave conditions.
Some hazardous wastes can become flammable during transport or disposal, or can create a biohazard.
Glass or other sharp objects, dirt, dust, ashes, hair or other similar material, may be placed in the bin, but must be securely wrapped or contained prior to disposal.
Some of these items - including gas bottles, batteries, oil, domestic quantities of household chemicals, oils, paints or solvents, glass/plastic and metal containers - can be taken to the Scone, Aberdeen, Merriwa and Murrurundi Waste Management Facilities and disposed of free of charge.
Asbestos can be disposed of at the Scone, Aberdeen and Merriwa Waste Depots but must be wet down and completely encased in a heavy duty plastic and sealed so no particles can escape. Notify the waste disposal centre at least 24 hours prior to bringing any asbestos onto the site. Council requires a handling fee to be paid in addition to the normal disposal costs. Asbestos is not accepted at Murrurundi Waste Depot.
