Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces was inaugurated in 1990 and is a celebration of the region's historic association with the Australian Wool Industry. The Festival is held on the June long weekend each year with some entertainment being held Friday night and the majority of events being staged on the Saturday. The Festival is a notable event throughout the State where visitors have enjoyed observing the street parade which includes the popular 'running of the sheep in red socks'.
