Economic
Agricultural industries remain the major employer in the region. Originally the district was known for quality wool and fat lambs, however broad acre grain production and beef cattle have also grown.
The agricultural industry in Merriwa is not just on-farm production but is supplemented by farming contractors, agricultural supply businesses, transport, and local manufacturing.
Merriwa is in close proximity to regional mines, vineyards and horse studs and is only 50 minutes drive to Muswellbrook.
There is a thriving retail environment in the Merriwa town centre.
Health Services
Merriwa has a multi-purpose Service located at the hospital, two GPs, and an aged care facility, Gummun Place.
Recreation
Merriwa has sporting facilities with dedicated sporting groups participating in a wide variety of activities, including rugby league, rugby union, athletics, netball, squash, tennis, lawn bowls, golf and a variety of horse sports.
Merriwa has a public swimming pool, gym, sports fields and a showground.
Education
There is a pre-school, Merriwa Central School for children from Kindergarten through to Year 12 and St Joseph's Primary School.
Housing
The median rent per week for a dwelling is $175 (Census 2016).
Major Festival
Festival of the Fleeces is held on the June long weekend and the Merriwa Springtime Show is held in September.
